Whisker, the company behind the popular self-cleaning litter box, has pushed further into smart pet tech with the Litter-Robot 5 Pro. The flagship model adds a dual-camera system and sensor array meant to identify individual cats by face, log their bathroom habits, and flag potential health issues like changes in frequency or weight.

The pitch is compelling for multi-cat owners: instead of generic usage stats, you'd get per-cat health tracking without extra hardware. But a hands-on review from The Verge found the facial recognition isn't fully reliable yet, occasionally mixing up which cat used the box - undercutting the feature's core promise.

Still, the underlying sensors for waste detection and cleaning cycles reportedly work well, continuing Whisker's reputation for solid core scooping functionality even as it layers on AI extras.

Why it matters: This is a good example of AI being bolted onto hardware before it's fully baked - facial recognition for pets is a much harder computer vision problem than it sounds, given similar fur patterns and lighting variability in a litter box enclosure. It also raises a familiar smart-home question: is cloud-connected AI tracking worth it if the core mechanical function already works fine on its own?
