Smart Pet Feeder Outage Leaves Owners Scrambling, Pets Hungry

A cloud service disruption for a connected pet feeder shows how app-dependent gadgets can fail at the worst possible moment.

Owners of a popular smart pet feeder say a server outage kept the device from dispensing scheduled meals, leaving cats and dogs without food until the problem was manually caught and fixed. Because the feeders rely on a cloud connection to trigger feedings and confirm they happened, the outage silently broke that link — with no local fallback to keep meals on schedule.

Several pet owners described the incident as a trust-breaking event, noting they'd chosen the device specifically to automate care while away, only to discover the automation had a single point of failure they couldn't see or control.

The company has acknowledged the outage and pointed to a backend issue, but hasn't detailed what changes, if any, will prevent a repeat.
