Nvidia to Acquire Hugging Face for $12.9 Billion

The chipmaker is buying the open-source AI hub that hosts over 3 million models and serves 18 million developers.

Nvidia has confirmed a deal to acquire Hugging Face for $12.9 billion, bringing one of the most widely used homes for open-source AI models and datasets under the world's dominant AI hardware maker.

Hugging Face has become a default starting point for developers building with machine learning, hosting millions of models, datasets, and tools used across research labs, startups, and enterprises. The acquisition gives Nvidia direct ownership of that community and its data, rather than just the chips underneath it.

Details on how Hugging Face will operate post-acquisition, including whether its open platform and neutral positioning toward rival hardware vendors will continue unchanged, have not yet been disclosed.

Why it matters: Hugging Face's value has always rested partly on being a neutral hub that works equally well with any hardware or cloud backend; Nvidia ownership raises real questions about whether that neutrality survives. If model hosting or tooling starts favoring Nvidia GPUs, competitors like AMD and cloud-based accelerators could face a subtle but consequential disadvantage in developer mindshare.
