Oura Faces Class-Action Suit Over Sleep-Stage Tracking Claims

A new lawsuit argues the popular smart ring can't actually measure brain activity, despite marketing that suggests otherwise.

Oura, maker of the wildly popular smart ring, is being sued in a proposed class-action complaint that accuses the company of overselling its sleep-tracking capabilities. The suit claims Oura can't truly detect sleep stages like REM or deep sleep because doing so requires measuring brain waves directly, something no ring-based wearable can do.

Instead, Oura relies on a mix of motion, heart rate, and temperature sensors, feeding that data into AI models that estimate sleep stages rather than measure them outright. The complaint argues this amounts to selling a false sense of precision to customers who are anxious about their sleep quality and looking for hard answers.

Oura hasn't publicly responded in detail, but the case raises broader questions about how wearable makers market AI-driven health estimates as if they were clinical-grade measurements.
