Chrome Now Blocks Over 7 Billion Spammy Android Notifications Every Day

Google says its anti-abuse systems in Chrome are quietly stopping billions of unwanted push notifications from reaching Android users each day.

Google has shared new figures showing just how much notification spam it's filtering out on Android through Chrome. According to the company, its detection systems flagged and blocked more than 7 billion unwanted notifications per day during the first quarter of 2026, a sharp jump from previous efforts to clean up the browser's notification permissions system.

The crackdown targets sites that use deceptive tactics to get users to opt into notifications, then flood them with scammy alerts, fake virus warnings, misleading ads, or clickbait designed to drive traffic back to sketchy pages. Chrome's abuse-detection tools work by identifying patterns typical of these bad actors, such as sudden spikes in notification volume or high rates of users blocking a given site, and then suppressing future permission requests or notifications from repeat offenders.

This builds on changes Google introduced over the past few years, including quieter default permission prompts and automatic muting of sites that generate a lot of unwanted notifications. The new number suggests those systems have scaled significantly as more sites attempt to abuse the feature.

Why it matters: Web push notifications became one of the easiest ways for scammers to hijack a persistent channel to a victim's lock screen, often disguised as system alerts. A meaningful reduction at this scale means less exposure to phishing and scareware for the billions of people who never realized they'd granted a shady site permission to message them directly. It's also a reminder that reviewing and revoking notification permissions periodically is still a good habit, since the filters catch a lot but not everything.
