ChatGPT, Grok, and Claude All Go Down Within Minutes of Each Other

Three of the biggest AI chatbots suffered overlapping outages Tuesday morning, leaving users across all three platforms locked out.

OpenAI's ChatGPT and Codex began throwing errors for users around 11AM ET, with the company's status page confirming "elevated errors" across both products. Roughly 30 minutes earlier, Anthropic's Claude started failing too, initially affecting several model versions including Opus 4.8, Opus 5, and the Mythos/Fable line, before Anthropic narrowed the impact to just Opus 4.8 and Opus 5. Meanwhile, xAI's Grok went down across both its app and website around the same window.

It's unclear whether the outages share a common cause, such as a shared cloud provider or networking issue, or whether it's simply a coincidence of timing. None of the three companies have pointed to a root cause yet.

Why it matters: When three unrelated AI companies with separate infrastructure go down simultaneously, it's a reminder of how much of the internet's backend has consolidated around a handful of cloud providers and CDNs. It also underscores growing dependence on chatbots for everyday coding and work tasks — an outage like this can stall real productivity, not just inconvenience casual users.
