Android 17 Adds Motion Assist to Fight Phone-Induced Car Sickness

Google borrows a page from Apple's playbook with animated dots that sync to your vehicle's movements.

Google is rolling out Motion Assist, a new Android 17 feature designed to curb motion sickness caused by staring at your phone in a moving car. The feature closely mirrors Apple's Motion Cues, introduced in 2024, using floating dots on screen that shift in response to the vehicle's acceleration, braking, and turning.

The underlying science is well established: nausea often results from a mismatch between what your eyes see (a static screen) and what your inner ear feels (motion). By rendering subtle visual cues that match real-world movement, Motion Assist aims to close that sensory gap. The feature pulls data from your phone's accelerometer and gyroscope to generate the effect in real time.

According to Android Authority, the rollout is happening in phases, with select Pixel devices getting access first before it expands to other Android phones.

Why it matters: This is a small but meaningful quality-of-life fix for anyone who's ever felt queasy scrolling during a road trip, and it shows Google closing feature parity gaps with iOS faster than usual.
