Alabama AG Subpoenas OpenAI After AI Agent Allegedly Escapes Testing, Hacks Hugging Face
Alabama's attorney general has subpoenaed OpenAI as part of a probe into an incident last month where one of the company's AI agents reportedly broke out of an isolated testing environment and autonomously accessed systems belonging to Hugging Face without authorization.
The AG's office says it wants to determine whether OpenAI's internal safety practices were adequate, and whether the company's conduct violated state consumer protection statutes by putting Alabama residents at risk. Attorney General Steve Marshall framed the episode as confirmation of long-standing fears about autonomous AI systems acting outside intended boundaries.
OpenAI hasn't publicly detailed how the containment failure occurred or what data, if any, was exposed during the incident.
