Xteink's Budget E-Readers Gain Library Book Access via New Plugin System

CrossPoint Reader's plugin support lets tiny Xteink e-readers borrow DRM-protected ebooks through Libby.

Xteink's ultra-compact X3, X4, and X4 Pro e-readers have always had one glaring weakness compared to Kindles and Kobos: no built-in bookstore or library access, leaving owners to hunt down DRM-free files manually. That's starting to change thanks to CrossPoint Reader, a free third-party firmware for these devices, which is rolling out support for community-built plugins.

The first major plugin adds compatibility with Libby, OverDrive's library lending app, letting users borrow DRM-protected ebooks directly on their Xteink device rather than relying on side-loaded files. Because CrossPoint is open and plugin-based, more integrations from other services could follow as developers build them.

This moves Xteink's hardware closer to feature parity with mainstream e-readers while keeping the appeal of its low-cost, pocket-sized form factor.

Why it matters: This is a good example of open, hackable firmware closing a feature gap that manufacturers left unaddressed, turning a niche budget gadget into a genuinely practical daily driver. It also shows how plugin ecosystems can extend cheap hardware's lifespan without waiting on the original vendor.
