Robin Williams' Kids Revive His Instagram to Push Back on AI Deepfakes

Zak, Zelda, and Cody Williams are using their father's old account to combat unauthorized AI recreations of his likeness.

Robin Williams' three children have taken control of his dormant Instagram account, turning it into what they call a "safe, trusted place" for his real legacy. The move comes after Zelda Williams publicly criticized the growing trend of AI-generated videos and images that recreate her father's voice and image without consent.

The family's statement frames the relaunch as a direct response to what they describe as "rampant AI abuse" — a reference to the flood of synthetic media using deceased celebrities' likenesses, often without any oversight from estates or families.

This follows similar pushback from other public figures and estates as generative AI tools make it trivially easy to fabricate convincing audio and video of real people, alive or dead.

Why it matters: As AI voice-cloning and video synthesis tools get cheaper and more realistic, control over a deceased person's digital likeness is becoming a real legal and ethical battleground. Expect more estates to formalize policies — or push for legislation — around posthumous AI likeness rights, especially as platforms lack consistent enforcement.
