Reticulum Offers a DIY Stack for Building Encrypted Mesh Networks
Reticulum is a networking stack designed to let people build their own communication networks without relying on centralized infrastructure like ISPs or cell towers. It works over almost any transport medium, including LoRa radios, packet radio, WiFi, or plain internet links, and layers strong encryption and cryptographic addressing on top by default.
The project targets use cases like off-grid communication, disaster recovery networks, or privacy-focused peer-to-peer apps. It includes tools for building actual applications, like an encrypted messaging system called LXMF, on top of the base networking layer.
It's been around for a few years but keeps resurfacing in maker and prepper-adjacent communities as a serious alternative to relying on traditional network providers.
